Cycling Korea in Spring: A Quiet Cherry Blossom Ride from Sangju to Andong Dam (Nakdong River Path)

Welcome back to another cycling adventure in South Korea!

If you are looking for the perfect spring riding route, you are in the right place. Recently, the amazing subscribers on my YouTube channel, Yedaling, highly recommended a specific course for cherry blossom hunting.

After checking the distance and the blooming forecast, I knew it was the absolute perfect choice.

Today, I am taking you on a stunning, quiet, and highly rewarding 71km journey from Sangju to Andong Dam.

This route is a major section of the Nakdong River path and the Korean Cross-Country Cycling network.

I will share everything you need to know: where to park for free, local food recommendations, how to navigate the hills, and a crucial local hack on how to jump back to your car using a Korean taxi app.

๐Ÿฅฃ Pre-Ride Prep: Fueling Up with Gukbap

Hearty Gukbap traditional Korean soup at Goesan Rest Stop for cyclist recovery

Because I knew there wouldn’t be many places to buy food along the bike path, I made sure to fuel up heavily before arriving. While driving to the starting point, I stopped at the Goesan Highway Rest Area.

I highly recommend ordering a warm bowl of Gukbap (Korean traditional pork and rice soup). It only cost 7,000 KRW (about $5.20 USD), and it gave me the perfect, hearty energy boost I needed for a long day in the saddle.

๐Ÿš— Starting Point: Free Parking at Nakdonggang Chilbaek-ri Park

I drove my car from home and used Nakdonggang Chilbaek-ri Park as my starting point. If you are renting a car in Korea, this is a massive tip: the parking lot here is incredibly spacious, completely empty, and 100% free of charge!

The best part about this park is that it connects directly to the dedicated bicycle path.

You can unload your bike, gear up, and start pedaling safely right away.

๐ŸŒธ Segment 1: The Cherry Blossom Tunnel to Sangju Sangpung Bridge

POV cycling on the Nakdong River bike path towards Andong Dam

The moment I hit the trail from the park heading toward the Sangju Sangpung Bridge Certification Center , I was greeted by an endless, breathtaking tunnel of cherry blossoms.

I timed my trip from Sangju to Andong dam perfectly with the full bloom.

Riding under the softly falling pink petals with almost zero crowds was a magical experience.ย

In fact, throughout this entire trip, I only encountered two other cyclists!

If you want a peaceful, quiet cherry blossom ride away from the busy city crowds, this is the ultimate course.

(Note: I already got my red stamp at the Sangpung Bridge booth during my cross-country ride last year, so I skipped it this time and kept riding!)

๐Ÿ’ก Local Bestie Tip: How to Track Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Planning a spring trip? Download the KakaoMap app.

During spring, the app displays tiny “Cherry Blossom Emojis” over famous blooming spots or festival areas.

If you click on the emoji, it will tell you the exact blooming status (e.g., Budding, Blooming, Full Bloom). Itโ€™s a lifesaver for planning rides!

โ›ฐ๏ธ Segment 2: Conquering the Uphills to Andong Dam

After passing the bridge, I transitioned from the Saejae Bicycle Path into the Nakdong River Bicycle Path, heading straight for Andong Dam.

This section changes in character.

First, the cherry blossoms became scarce.ย

Because Andong is located further north and has a different microclimate than Sangju, the cherry trees here were still just budding.

While it was a bit disappointing not to see a full bloom all the way, I could easily imagine how spectacularly beautiful this entire 71km stretch would be a week later.

I highly urge you to perfectly time your visit to catch the full bloom hereโ€”it will be an unforgettable memory of South Korea!

Secondly, the terrain gets tougher.

You will faceย two major uphills.ย

Challenging uphill section towards Andong Dam on the Nakdong River route

The final climb leading toward Andong is quite long and will test your legs.

Additionally, there are sections where the dedicated bike path ends, and you must ride on public roads alongside cars.

Please ride safely and keep your rear lights on!

๐Ÿ… Arrival: Andong Dam & Wolyeonggyo Bridge

Finally, I crested the last hill and arrived at the majesticย Andong Dam Certification Center.ย

Stamping the Korea Cycling Passport at Andong Dam Certification Center

I proudly stamped my Cross-Country Passport and took a moment to rest.

Right next to the certification center is Wolyeonggyo Bridge, the longest wooden pedestrian bridge in Korea.

It is a stunning sight over the river.

However, please be aware: Bicycles and kickboards are strictly prohibited on the bridge.

I couldn’t ride across it, but capturing its beauty with my eyes from the riverside was more than enough.

๐Ÿ— Post-Ride Reward: What to Eat in Andong

Delicious traditional Korean drink after a long ride in Andong

Wolyeonggyo is a major tourist attraction, which means there are plenty of excellent restaurants and cafes nearby.

When you are in Andong, you absolutely must try Andong Jjimdak (a savory and slightly spicy braised chicken dish with glass noodles) or their famous Grilled Salted Mackerel

They are regional specialties!

As for me, I opted for a quick cafe stop and enjoyed a Mugwort Rice Cake Shake

It was sweet, nutty, and incredibly refreshing after climbing those hills.

๐Ÿš• The Ultimate Hack: Jumping Back with Kakao T Taxi

Since this was a point-to-point ride, I had to travel 71km back to my car in Sangju.

Here is my exact process using the Kakao T app to catch a ride with my road bike:

  1. Call a Taxi: Because Wolyeonggyo is a popular tourist spot, finding a taxi on the app was very easy. I selected the standard ‘General Taxi’.
  2. Message the Driver: This is the most important step! The moment a driver accepted my ride, I used the appโ€™s messaging feature to ask: “Can I ride with my bicycle if I take the front wheel off?”
  3. The Pick-up: The driver kindly agreed! Luckily, he drove a Kia Sportage (a compact SUV) and was very friendly toward cyclists. I popped the front wheel off, slid the bike into the back seat, and hopped in.
  4. The Cost: The meter came out to about 80,000 KRW (approx. $60 USD). It sounds a bit pricey, but considering I was crossing regional borders from Andong all the way back to Sangju, it was completely understandable and totally worth the convenience.

I arrived safely back at Nakdonggang Chilbaek-ri Park, loaded my bike into my car, and wrapped up a flawless spring cycling trip;Sangju to Andong Dam.

Iโ€™m currently archiving the most up-to-date data from my 2026 rides to create the ‘Ultimate Korea Cross-Country Guide.’ This E-book is set to launch early 2027 (or late 2026). Follow my journey as I build the perfect guide for you!

Enjoyed the ride?
